My teaching philosophy

I have taught for many years and at the heart of everything I do is nurturing the whole child .
I believe that children need the space and care to be able to become successful learners. School can put a huge amount of pressure on children to work at a pace that puts a unmanageable cognitive load on them. This mixed with neurodiversity and anxiety can often lead to school avoidance. The effects that lockdown and covid had on children is significant and made me realise that it is time for change in our attitude to learning. I have worked with children who have not been able to achieve their potential in a mainstream system as the system put too many restraints on them. I have seen imaginative, wonderful children feel like they are failing because they cannot read or write at the level expected for their age. This may be due to dyslexia or some other learning need. Children need a great start to their learning and I am here to help with that. I nurture every child that I teach, encouraging them to flourish in the areas that they are good at and giving them help in the areas that they find more tricky. I hope to instill a love of learning in every child that I teach, a happy child is a happy learner.
A little about me
My interest in teaching began from a young age. I found school challenging and remember the experience of having a wonderful teacher who really understood me and the struggles I had as a learner. I will never forget how they treated me as an individual and helped me to grow as a learner. I knew that I wanted to be a teacher that could make a change in children's lives, who could nurture and encourage individuals to learn in their own way and at their own pace. I trained to be a teacher in 2010, with many years of classroom practice, I found that I would be praised on how well I made relationships with children. I gave children time and understood that often the classroom environment was overwhelming.
I wholeheartedly believe that children learn best when they have trusting relationships with kind adults built on mutual respect, and where the teacher has invested time and attention to find out about the child's interests. Parents and teachers often committed on how I viewed children as individuals and knew that I needed to adapt my teaching to the individual child.
I first set up my tutoring business in 2015, I had small children and wanted to be able to be more flexible at work in order to nurture their growing minds. Over time, I did go back to classroom but found that I preferred tutoring as it gave the children that I taught the space and time that they needed to learn in their own way. During this time, I took advice from SEND experts and read and studied on how to make the classroom suitable for children struggling to stay in class due to neurovirsity, anxiety and many other reasons. It was during this period that I brought an exercise bike into the classroom- this was a huge success- I knew that some children in my class found it incredibly hard to focus for long periods of time due to ADHD and Autism, this way they were able to stay in the classroom and move at the same time ensuring that they were not missing chunks of their learning. Even with all the adaptations, I knew that I wanted to teach in a different environment which is why I started Sarah's Tuition. Sarah's tuition gives children the space to excel in their own way. I work in a partnership with schools and parents in order to help the individual achieve the best of their abilities.
